does any one know any dance schools or academies in philadelphia?

14th August

me and my little 3 year old cousin are trying to find some dance school to join, that has ballet or pop dance classes.please answer asap.

You have the Rock school and Koresh Dance. Two very famous dance schools. I do think they have programs for little ones there too. For a three year old it would be creative movement. I think they are even too young for pre-ballet, but I am not sure.

what are some good dance schools or colleges in california?

11th August

I am going to be a senior in high school and I really want to dance professionally. I’m going to be 17. I don’t have a lot of dance experience but I absolutely LOVE dancing and I am willing to get better just to go to a school for it. I want to know what schools are in CA and will they accept me if I am a okay/good dance and want to become a professional? I love dancing so much!

Hi Dani! I had a roommate last year that’s mother owned a dance school and my response to your question is: is there a certain area in California that you want to practice? If you do (or even don’t) check out California College Search. From here you can look at colleges by zip code or city, type or name of the college, or by the degree, dance, you would like to go into. When you find a college(s) you are interested in fill out the corresponding form and they will send you free information about their program, price, etc. Good Luck!

What are good dance schools that teach hip hop in Las Vegas?

7th August

I’m fourteen and my sister is eleven. It needs to be as cheap as possible but still a good quality school. Also, starting August 30 I will be in school from 7-1:30, and my sister gets out at 2:30.

Well, just go to http://www.yelp.com/ , search "dance studio", enter your zip code or city and state, and click search. It’s the best local businesses/reviews site ever, and it’s very popular so you’re gonna get a lot of reviews. If the business has a website, it’ll be listed there on its profile. Go to the business’s website and look at the tuition and schedule/calendar. If the site doesn’t have it, call up and ask. Don’t email because they rarely answer. If they do, they take weeks.
Hope I helped! Good luck!

What are the top dance colleges and schools in the world?

13th July

What are the best dancing schools / colleges in the world for different types of dancing.
for ballet, tap, ballroom, salsa and hip hop.
Please comment if you know what the top school is for any of the 5 styles.
Thank-You!

There are no colleges for hip hop.
Ballet dancers go directly into companies not college, but there is Indiana U and Butler U.
No college for ballroom, or salsa either.

Most college/conservatories are contemporary based like Juilliard or NYU Tisch. Some offer a stronger ballet focus like the ones I mentioned. Others offer Jazz as well, but none are for the 4 stiyles other than ballet that you mentioned.
(Juilliard does have tap as an elective)

What are some dance schools for kids in the puget sound area of washington?

24th June

are there any schools that welcome newcomers to dance like tap or jazz that are in the puget sound area? dance schools like dance premier. im 13 and going to be taking tap or jazz for the first time and i want to ind a place that will have begginer classes with girls my age and then classes that i can move up to.

I’m not sure exactly where you’re located, since the Puget Sound area encompasses quite a distance and a lot of cities. However, for starters, since you’ve mentioned Dance Premier, and if you’re already familiar with this studio and its satellite location in Issaquah, you might want to contact the owner or manager at http://dancepremier.com/ or by phone at (425) 427-2328 about beginners’ classes. If Issaquah is too far for you, you can still contact Dance Premier to see if they can recommend a studio with beginner tap and jazz classes in *your* area.

There are quite a few dance studios and places that offer beginning jazz and tap dancing classes for teens in various parts of the Puget Sound area, including the following:

All the Dance in Seattle at http://www.all-that-dance.com/

YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties at http://www.ymcapkc.org/page.php?id=182

Puget Sound Gymnastics & Dance in North Bend at http://psgdnorthbend.com/default.aspx

Carrabba Dance Theater & School in Seattle at http://www.cameodance.com/teen-classes.html

Velocity Dance Center in Seattle at http://www.velocitydancecenter.org/

Spectrum Dance Theater in Seattle at http://www.spectrumdance.org/school/featured-items.php

Dance Fremont! in Seattle at http://www.dancefremont.com/

5th Avenue Theater in Seattle at http://www.5thavenue.org/education/danceclasses.aspx

I’m sure there are other places, as well (including your local Recreation & Parks Department and/or local Community Center, etc.), and you can certainly ask for recommendations when you contact the places I’ve mentioned above. You can also do a web search for "dance (or jazz or tap, etc.) class + [your city]" for studios and classes that are closest to you. You’ll also notice that there’s a wide range of prices for these classes, and usually, by purchasing a block of classes in advance, you can save on the per-class cost. Some places might offer scholarships or reduced class fees, as well. You’ll just have to check — and ask! :-)

There’s a good article entitled "How To Find a Dance Class " online at http://dance.about.com/od/getstarteddancing/ht/Find_Class.htm that also has links to other good articles on dance and getting started, etc. I’m sure you’ll find all of them helpful.

I truly wish you the best! Enjoy your dancing experience!

what are some great dance schools in the Huntington New York area?

4th May

i have taken dance before tap jazz ballet and very little hip-hop i would like to try lyrical and some type of recital or competition i really want to start up again because everyone at my school is now a really competitive dancer and i really want to make dance company. btw im 14

The competition dance schools in Huntington are pretty bad, Schools like Dancing Feet and Platinum Performance have poor facilities, dangerous dance floors, even poorer teachers not to mention high over priced classes. They teach a dance not how to dance. If you are looking for skills try Variations on Spring Road. They have several companies and performance opportunities although do not do recitals and competitions. They have state of the art dance flooring, well trained teachers and a wide range of dance classes at many levels. They also have guest teachers from the top schools and professionals from NYC. If you live in or near Huntington, you are lucky to have a place like that to study. They have had guest teachers from Broadway, Principal dancers from NYC Ballet, Mia Michaels, Savion Glover for tap. The list goes on. If you can’t get to NYC for classes. This is the closest to that experience on all of Long Island.

The Gambler – Do I Hold, Fold or Run?

3rd May

Today’s home buyer is concerned with a variety of things: good neighborhoods, good schools, employment opportunities, quality recreation – but overriding everything are the questions, “Should I buy now.  Have prices bottomed out?  Will the price be lowered later?  Should I rent?  Watchful waiting is a solution for prostate cancer…maybe it’s the solution here as well?”

As a Realtor we have seen the pendulum swing from the Seller’s side of the table way over to the Buyer’s side.

It wasn’t so many years ago that you’d come to Bellingham, Washington looking to purchase that home of your dreams & we’d drive down any street in Bellingham (or Whatcom County for that matter) & what we’d see were “Sale Pending” signs. We’d write an offer on the perfect Bellingham home that just came on the market only to find that there were 4 offers in front of us & the doggone Seller wasn’t even going to look at the offers until the following week. In order to compete in this arena we’d virtually be forced to write our offer for more than full price, waive the financing & inspection contingencies, give the Seller everything he could possibly want only to get a response back from the Seller telling us that it still wasn’t good enough (more than full price is not good enough?.) We’d be told to re-submit the “Best Offer” we could write & he would make his choice. The problem was that the Buyer was really forced to dance to the Seller’s tune because there was little inventory, his wife & family were living out of a suitcase in the Holiday Inn & his moving truck was 2 days out of town.

Fast forward to today – July, 2008.

The pendulum has swung to the Buyer’s side of the table & then some. We drive down the same streets in Bellingham & Whatcom County & what do we see but “Priced Reduced”, “New Price”, “Re-Visited Price”, “Price Modified” – in fact there was one Realtor that subscribed to the theory if one is good, 2 or more has to be better, so he festooned his sign with multiple “Price Reduced” signs. There are Seller concessions, agent concessions, lender concessions – everybody is willing to give the Buyer something in hopes that he / she will step up & buy. I saw an ad that talked about an attractive Florida divorcee who had her house on the market & couldn’t sell it, so, since she was in the market for a husband anyway, she decided to market herself & the house in a single package – Yankee ingenuity is great but I’m not sure that the general public would find this an acceptable strategy for either buying or selling.

The Buyer still has a dilemma though. Everything that the Buyer hears, reads & sees makes him / her wonder if he buys today will the home be worth less tomorrow. Maybe he should just wait. That philosophy is hard to fault, however a Buyer really needs to analyze the particular market he’s moving to & determine just how speculative this specific area really is. Our oldest son lives in Mountain View, California & tells us there are areas in Stockton, California where home owners are not only leaving their homes by the dark of the moon but leaving their pets as well, often times locked up in the now vacant house. The problem is so widespread that the Humane Society is urging homeowners who are faced with foreclosure to take their animals to an animal shelter rather than leaving them unattended.

Now I’m here to tell you if you are considering a move to one of these areas, the prudent thing for a Buyer may be to wait & see how the market sorts out. Bellingham, Washington & many other areas are something else altogether. While the media paints with a wide brush & you see examples of their embellished articles every day in the morning newspaper, a Buyer certainly needs to be site specific in determining whether to purchase today or to wait

A Buyer today is well advised to step back & look at a community statistically to see what has & is happening regarding inventory, prices & consumer confidence to determine how they as Buyers or Sellers should respond to the market. Analytical tools that Buyers & Sellers both can use to determine the state of the market & then help them decide if it makes sense to buy or sell are available through local MLS’s, real estate offices, city assessors offices & often times through local universities all of which can be used to track sales, inventory & absorption rates. It’s by drilling down & analyzing this data by area, price range & date over a period of time that you’ll be able to get a clearer idea of what is really happening in your community.

One of my all time favorite Country Western songs is “The Gambler” by Kenny Rodgers. In it, there is the lyric “You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away & know when to run”.

So, in terms of The Gambler, I admit there is very little good news coming out of the media today about real estate. However, I firmly believe that if you wait for every light to turn “Green” before you head to town, you’ll never get out of your driveway. So do your homework – there are good buys out there in every market, Sellers are motivated like they have never been before, interest rates are excellent & time is on your side. Depending where you live, if it’s Bellingham Washington or an area like Bellingham Washington, don’t wait for all those lights to turn green before you go into town – get into the game & play your cards.

A Visit to Koh Tao With an Interview in Mind

2nd May

Koh Tao, or Turtle Island, is not a big island; indeed it only covers 21 square kilometers. It is situated in the Gulf of Thailand off the western seaboard coastline, and it only takes about one and half hours to get there by high speed catamaran from Chumpon.

The majority of turtles that the island was famous for have moved away, and now it is known as one of the major dive sites in Thailand.

There is only one major road on the island, straddling the eastern side of the island, connecting the northern communities with those in the south. Other than that, you will need to take care when traveling around as most of the other roads are dirt tracks.

I find that the best way to get there from Bangkok is by train to Chumpon and then the catamaran. All in, the one way cost is only about 1,200bt and you can buy both tickets at Hua Lampong railway station in Bangkok. Depending on the connections, it takes about twelve hours to get to the island from Bangkok

Recently I went there to meet up with my mate Shane and Sao, his lovely wife. Sao runs a business supporting the dive industry on the island, and concentrates on renting out DPVs. For the uninitiated, DPVs (Diver Propulsion Vehicles) are normally used for diving and snorkeling and can go to a depth of 30 meters

Shane has had a number of business ventures in the U.K. and Portugal. I wanted to find out from Sao what she had learnt from him, and also, what her experience was of running a business in Thailand mainly catering to foreigners.

Allan – Ok, Sao, just how much have your learnt from Shane in running a small business?

Sao -   Well, it was quite a novelty moving to such a small island, learning to dive and then starting the underwater scooter business. It has been an interesting learning curve, and I am lucky that generally all the people I have to deal with are all in all a friendly bunch.

Allan – What is the market like for DPVs on the island at the moment?

Sao – We are lucky that most of the dive schools on the island are happy to use our services, and frankly, diving with a DPV is great fun!!

Allan – What has been your most frustrating business moments on the island?

Sao – Getting parts for the Seadoo DPVs. Despite the fact that Seadoo is a household name in the water sports industry, we normally have more broken machines than working, and getting spare parts is a nightmare. At the moment 70% of our DPVs have broken down and we have waited nearly a year for spare parts. We are hoping that Seadoo can get their house in order and we can get back to offering the best service available.

Allan – And what is your favorite part of the job?

Sao - Getting out there and talking to people every day, and best of all hearing that our clients have had a great time with the DPVs

Allan – What advice would you give to someone starting a small business in Thailand?

Sao – If you plan to start a business offering goods or a service, make sure you can rely on your suppliers. The buck stops with you. !

As I have only been to Koh Tao a couple of times, I also thought that it would be good to get Shane’s ideas on what to see and do on the island.

Allan – I know that Koh Tao is famous as a dive site, so what else would you recommend to do and see during the day?

Shane—There is not a great deal to do on the island except water sports and chilling out, but we do have a mini golf and a bowling alley, paintball, rock climbing and of course water skiing, wakeboarding, and snorkeling.

A round the Island snorkeling trip makes a great day out, available with various companies for around 650bt, stopping in five different bays around the island, but do remember the sun block!!!

(MELT offers a round the Island trip for 650bt, including fins, mask, refreshments/soft drinks, tire riding and a boom net.

Allan – Anything interesting to buy on the island, e.g. to take home as presents?

Shane – Nothing much is produced in Koh Tao and most things come from the mainland, However, Avalon offer large range of aromatic and massage oils, toners and various natural beauty products not readily available everywhere. Free advice is available from Andrea (Avalon@suthep.com).There is also an up and coming U. K. clothes designer recently arrived on the island – Nikki Noodles can design and personally tailor clothes for ladies at a fraction of European prices.

Allan – Where would you recommend eating? 1. Tasty and not expensive. 2. Excellent and not too expansive?

Shane – There are lots of places on Koh Tao to eat and drink. Eating and drinking establishments on Koh Tao have been opening at an alarming rate in the last couple of years

For myself, I enjoy a relaxing drink after diving at the Safety Stop in Mae Haad, where Western and Thai food is available on the menu. Brian, the owner from South Africa, also makes a mean Biltong (dried beef.). South African style!!

Dirty Nellys, the Irish Pub in Mae Haad, offer a western menu and a tasty pint of Guinness with live music some evenings. Choppers, in Sairee Village, also have live music some evenings, have large screen TV’s and show most sports events. Opposite Choppers is ‘Morava’, an up-market restaurant offering their speciality of fondue. Just down the road is Papas Tapas, offering an extensive menu of very tasty tapas dishes. Portabello offers a range of main courses including pizza and pasta, and there is also Brother Restaurant which has fantastic steaks.

There are so many places on Koh Tao to eat drink and be merry, it is probably easiest just to list a few places to try.

Chopsticks, in Mae Haad, has authentic Chinese food and is also a nice change from Thai food. The house speciality is dim sum.

The Golden, which is between Mae Haad and Chalok Ban Khao, has an all you can eat Korean Barbeque for 139bt.

Safari – Mae Haad – Great Steaks and pizza and pasta also available.

La Matta – Mae Haad. Pizza & pasta, takeaway and delivery available

Café Del So l-Mae Haad – great breakfast.

Zest – Mae Haad – for a great sandwich/baguette and delicious coffee; a perfect start to the day!!

Farangos – Mae Haad and Sairee Village – pizza and pasta.

Blue Wind Bakery - situated on the beach in Sairee – homemade bread and a very varied menu. It also has accommodation available at a very reasonable price just meters from the beach.

Shalimar Indian Restaurant – Sairee Village – authentic Indian cuisine in a walled garden surround. Reasonable prices with curries to die for.

Noori Indian Restaurant – Sairee Beach. Situated right on the beach next to the Lotus Bar, Indian food incorporating some of the best naan breads I have ever tasted.

Lotus Bar – Sairee Beach – if you are under 50, this is a ‘Must Go Place’ and a starting point for the night life; meters from the sea, and a place to warm up before going on to the late night dancing a little bit further down the beach.

Sun & Moon bar is a 1st floor bar in Mae Haad at the dockside, and a great evening place. It has a playstation 3 and free Wi-Fi is available for their customers, plus a balcony to relax on as you watch the sunset. A cocktail as you ‘watch the sun go down’. is what makes the holiday. A perfect place to just do it! Loads of information and advice on Koh Tao is also available. Just ask at the bar staff, and, if they cannot help, then ‘They Know Someone Who Can!’  – Simon on 0810789963

Allan – And how about where to go to party after dark?

Shane – After Dark Parties!!! There is always the beach, and most of the late night places are on the beach; sit on the sand enjoying a drink, or get up on that dance floor and show everyone what John Travolta didn’t do!!!  The late night places are all in the same area, and some are open whilst the others shut. There is Maya, In Touch, Moov, one of which is open every night. Then there is the Castle on the way to Chalok Ban Khao that has a party every couple of weeks; well worth the wait!!! But don’t expect to get much sleep. The party at the Castle is an event!!!!

Allan – Finally, what should you not do on the island?

Shane—Simply, Two Things.

1. Avoid drugs. The penalties are harsh. Whilst in Europe a marijuana joint is a minimal legal infraction, in Thailand, generally, the penalties are over the top, and a joint can cost you a couple of thousand US dollars.

Class ‘A’ drugs will definitely put you in prison for many years to come.

2. Do Not Use the front brake on your motorcycle . There is so much sand on the road that if you use the front brake, you will most likely lock the wheel and fall off.

Any damages to the rental bike and you have to pay over the odds for repairs, so be careful when renting a bike, and always check for previous damage!

Johnny from Chopsticks offers the ‘Rent A Wreck’ Rental service – ,john_stafford75@yahoo.co.uk – has older bikes which work well but may not look pretty. Cosmetic bike injury he tends not to charge for!

To the uninitiated Koh Tao is a wonderful Island to visit; relaxed, friendly and somewhere you have to visit before you die. !!!!!

With the question and answer session over we retired to Sairee Beach for a few well deserved beers. A big thanks you to Shane and Sao for a wonderful insight to life on Koh Tao!

Shane and Sao can be contacted on 085 791 4610 or 084 840 5997 if you are interested in hiring a DPV, or indeed want to know more about Koh Tao.

Need to book some dives, find accommodation? Give us a call and we can point you in the right direction.

And finally, as usual, a big hello to my friends at the Thailand Web Zone, www.thailandwebzone.com, which is a new Thai social networking and Thailand community site.
