Ballet Lessons : How to Stretch for Leg Splits

21st August 2009

Stretch for a leg split in ballet by warming up the hamstrings and hips with all of the plies, and do a hamstring stretch starting with the knees on the floor and moving in to a split stretch. Stretch the hamstring forward and keep the hips warm and open for the splits with help from an experienced dance instructor in this free video ballet lesson.

I can finally do the splits now after two to three years of practice! :) And I only started doing dance properly last year…just shows that you can accomplish dance moves without starting dance classes when you’re two! Lol

    This video doesn’t …
This video doesn’t really instruct you to do anything but actually get down and do the splits! How about stretching down OVER your knee in that first position to loosen up your hamstring. Then bend the front knee and shift your weight forward, stretching the quad of the back leg. Gradually go deeper and deeper in those two positions – THAT will help you toward your splits. I started ballet at 27 with no prior dance experience, and it only took me about three months to get my splits this way.

    Hey time3t0ps, U r …
Hey time3t0ps, U r absolutely right about arabesque! But in this stretch u must keep ur hips forward. This stretch really helps ur grand jete! See how she looks like she is in a grand jete on the floor! The knee of the front leg should point up and the knee in back should point to the floor. Concentrate on keeping those hips forward. Laurie Gregoire is very flexible & makes it look easy. It is very difficult. Make sure u r totally stretched out before trying. Email me 4 more help!

  25. LookMaImDancinDotCom Says:

    NO! …
NO! twilightForeverLovXD you are wrong! This video is correct. Your back leg should not be turned out at all. If you turn out your hips open. It may be easier but it is not correct.
