Ballet is a formalized form of dance with its origins in the French court, further developed in France and Russia as a concert dance form.It is a highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary. It has been influential as a form of dance globally and is taught in ballet schools around the world which use their own culture and society to modernize the art.Ballet dance works ballets are choreographed, and also include mime, acting, and are set to music usually orchestral but occasionally vocal. It is best known in the form of classical ballet, notable for its techniques, such as pointe work and turn-out of the legs, its graceful, flowing, precise movements, and its ethereal qualities.Later developments include neoclassical ballet and contemporary ballet. The etymology of the word “ballet” is related to the art form’s history. The word ballet comes from the French and was borrowed into English around the 17th century. The French word in turn has its origins in Italian balletto,a diminutive of ballo dance.Ballet ultimately traces back to Latin ballare, meaning to dance.

This 6 part documentary on the Moscow Choreographic Academy , the actual name of the Bolshoi Ballet school , looks at the 2002/2003 ballet school year. There are four different students that this film focuses on. The main student is Natalia Osipova , who was 16 years old in 2002 and after finishing her seventh, and next to last year in the school, was 17 years old. After briefly showing Osipova in a school performance, they show the tryouts of the applicants for the first year of the school. Then it skips to the first day of the school year in September and progresses during the year. Osipova, is shown in class, in rehearsal and in performance at the graduation exams. She is shown dancing the Rose Adagio from Sleeping Beauty. She is also seen winning the grand prize at the Luxembourg ballet competition. The youngest student shown is the first year boy, Pasha Kozlov . It is interesting that when his parents come to Moscow to see their son in his graduation exams, his father mentions that he has never been in Moscow before. If Pasha is still at the school, he would have just finished his 6th year, with two years left. The final students are very unique in terms of what has happened to their careers. They are Kirill Safin and his younger brother, Igor Safin. Kirill graduated in 2006 and Igor 2007. They took a very unusual route in their ballet careers from the Moscow Choreographic school, ending up at the Mariinsky Theater. Igor has finished his first year with the Mariinsky (I like to call it Kirov ) and Kirill finished his second year. Both are in the corps de ballet, but Kirill has danced many solo roles. Kirill has been rehearsing Solor , so there is a possibility that he might have his first principal role in the upcoming year in Bayadere . His coach, the former Kirov star, Sergei Vikhulov , expects a promising career for Kirill. The director of the Bolshoi school is Marina Leonova, who is shown often in this documentary. I am not certain, but one of the parts in these videos ends and the next video starts with a boys class that Leonova enters. I think the teacher is the former Bolshoi ballet star, Yuri Vasyuchenko .

This is part 3 of a 6 part film made in 1994, but distributed in 1995. The film focuses on one of the greatest ballet teachers of the 20th century, Ludmila Pavlovna Sakharova . Sakharova is the current artistic director of the Perm Ballet school , known as the Perm choreographic school similar to the Bolshoi Ballet school being called the Moscow choreographic school. The Perm school is one of the top 3 ballet schools in Russia, with the others being the Vaganova Academy and Bolshoi school. Sakharova was the teacher that trained her most famous student and probably the most remarkable teenage student ever, Nadezhda Pavlova . At the same time that she was teaching Pavlova , her other student, Olga Chenchikova , was winning the silver medal against older professional dancers in the 1973 Moscow Ballet Competition when 16 year old Pavlova became the only ballerina to win the Grand Prize at a major competition of that level.
The film starts with one of their foreign students, a girl from Ireland talking. The student that is the main focus of this documentary is Natasha Balakhnicheva . Her fellow classmates shown are the girl from Ireland, two Japanese students and three Russians. American reviews of this film were very critical of Sakharova’s marine sergeant domination. She was considered like an evil witch and the film producer was criticized for showing too much of the girls’ faces while being yelled at. Sakharova might have traits of a Stalin type dictator, but when you see how much energy that she puts into teaching and how she acts at the end, you see that she loves ballet and loves her students, but sometimes has difficulty showing her love to her students. Anyone who could help produce a Nadezhda Pavlova is a very special teacher. This film taught me to ignore reviews because I think that this was a very well made film from a ballet standpoint and shows a great teacher, who makes it obvious that any student wanting to become a great professional ballerina cannot expect ballet training to be a fun picnic. Ballet is difficult and the competition is rough as the students trying to get accepted into the famous ballet school find out at the beginning of the movie.
My final comment is that part of the film focuses on the 3rd International Arabesque competition held in Perm. Among the important ballet personalities involved in this competition and shown in the film are Maya Plisetskaya , Vladimir Vasiliev and Ekaterina Maximova ( Maksimova ). An interesting note is that during the competition in 1994, the Kirov Mariinsky star , Lariissa Lezhnina is shown outside the back stage door, but only for a few seconds and probably the producer had no idea who she was. Natasha Balakhnicheva is shown in the competition dancing the pas de deux from Giselle , Carmen and a new ballet .
